Think of a jazz big band and it's probably the brassy sound of a '30s swing orchestra that comes to mind first. But throughout their more than 80-year history, big bands have come in all shapes and sizes and managed to create all sorts of sounds—some of them pretty unusual. This week on The New Jazz Archive, it's the rise, fall and legacy of the big bands. We’ll talk with music historian Jeffery Magee about how 1930s dance culture helped spark the big band revolution, and how the politics of race shaped the music. And we’ll discover why the big band sound is still finding a home in communities across America well past the heyday of swing, and go in search of music from the more experimental side of the big band sound.

Find out on The New Jazz Archive with acclaimed Michigan jazz composer, musician and educator Jeff Haas. Each week, Jeff artfully blends music and storytelling as he explores jazz and its ties to other traditions including rock-n-roll, the blues, soul, world and classical music. Think "radio version of the best liner notes collection ever compiled" ... with an engaging and sometimes edgy soundtrack to back it up.

The concept for The New Jazz Archive was inspired by Duke Ellington's philosophy: When asked to define jazz, the Duke responded, "as long as it's good music there is no need for definitions or categories - it's all music."
