A group of 25 U.S. Senators sent a letter to the White House this week urging the Obama administration to spend more on dredging federal harbors. The federal government collects fees from the shipping industry to maintain harbors but billions of dollars from that fund have not been spent on the intended purpose. The transportation bill passed this summer says the Congress wants that funding restored. In recent years federal support for small recreational harbors has almost completely dried up and towns like Leland and Arcadia struggling to keep their harbors open.
