While large fires like the recent Duck Lake Fire in the UP grab headlines, there are many smaller fires every year in northern Michigan. More than 130 have caught in the Huron-Manistee National Forest so far this spring, burning a few acres each. And that number has been creeping up in recent years. Some communities up north are deciding this is an issue they need to address.

Benzie County fire

We just experienced a wildfire on the west end of Crystal Lake in Benzie County, the fire started along M-22 and almost claimed a number of our homes on the bluff above the highway. Timely story, we are going to firewise our homes here which are apparently more vulnerable to fire than we ever imagined.

Maps

Great idea. I'll check with Jed.
