Lots of people around the Grand Traverse region say public transportation is important. In an opinion survey last year, 80 percent of the respondents said we should invest in public bus service even if it means spending less money on roads. There is even talk these days of a light rail system. But few of us actually ride the buses we have. Why not? Can you have good public transportation in a rural area or small city? That's our conversation on Points North, live Friday at 9 a.m. with a rebroadcast at 9 p.m. on 91.5 FM.

BATA

I would absolutely love to ride the bus with my young daughter on a regular basis. I am even more excited about the idea of a light rail system. The ONLY reason I don't use BATA at least somewhat regularly is because I live in Holiday Hills and there is no bus stop even somewhat close to me (within walking distance). By the time I get in the car and drive miles to a bus stop, I might as well just continue on to wherever I'm going. Yes, I could call for a bus to pick me up, but that is a bigger charge and necessitates forethought and extra effort. The point of a transportation system is not only for a better environment, but also lower transportation costs and convenience. For many TC residents, BATA is not yet convenient.

More Convenience for bus riders = More Buses, More Often = More Buses + More Drivers = More $ Where will the $ come from?
