Mental health advocates say there are simply far too many people sitting in a cell who really need treatment, not incarceration. In a time in Michigan when no program is safe from state budget cuts, Mental Health advocates have argued that keeping mentally ill petty criminals out of prisons and jails would be a cost savings.

Hear about a jail-alternative being tested out in Grand Traverse County, the 86th District's new Mental Health Court. Is it cost-effective? That's too early to tell. But some argue it's just the right thing to do.
