Workers at the state Capitol building are trying to figure out how to remove a splattering of graffiti left overnight Wednesday.

Vandals spray-painted male and female stick figures on two of the building’s delicate sandstone columns. They also left a message reading “Give art a chance” on a memorial to veterans on the Capitol lawn.

Steve Benkovsky, the facilities director, says this is the worst damage to the historic site in more than two decades.

“When you take care of the building as much as we do, and we care for it, it just breaks your heart and gives you a sick feeling in your stomach when you see that,” he says.

Benkovsky estimates repairs could cost the state up to $8,000 dollars.

State police are still looking for possible suspects.
