Traverse City leaders voted this week to allow honeybees in town, after beekeeping enthusiasts asked for the change. The new law takes effect December 13th.

People will be allowed to keep as many as two hives on a parcel, as long as they are not placed within 10 feet of a sidewalk or roadway. Hives also have to be 25 feet from a neighbor’s house, or any other dwelling.

Keeping honeybees will require a city-issued license.

Chickens are also allowed within city limits. Traverse City made that change back in 2009.

No complaints here!

I have never had a neighbor to complain. Most people are actually fascinated over honeybees even if they are afraid. Keeping honeybees definitely takes you perception to another level of development. It teaches things about your own life and the society that you live in. If you do not believe me, then may I suggest getting involved, learning about bees, and keeping a hive for yourself! http://www.oldsouthhoney.com
