College students in Traverse City will fly unmanned airplanes known as drones in competition this week.

A team of seven students in the aviation program at Northwestern Michigan College will be part of an international competition at Webster Field near Washington, D.C.

Pilotless drones are expected to reshape the aviation industry in areas such as monitoring agriculture, security and border patrol.

The students will test their skills in computer guided navigation and gathering imagery from the air.

This is the first time a team from NMC is participating in the prestigious competition.
