A flotilla of 1,750 canoes and kayaks strung together Saturday on Suttons Bay was shy of the world record by about 150 boats. The final count was released Tuesday afternoon.

“We think it was really a great number for our first time and the limited resources that we had to put this event on,” says event organizer Kate Thornhill. “It was really the result of an incredible amount of support from our community and our school and our students and … pretty cool.”

Thornhill says organizers might try again next year. For now the record of 1,902 boats remains with the town of Inlet, New York.

The Suttons Bay event was a fundraiser for the cash-strapped local public school district. A fundraising tally is not yet available.
