Governor Rick Snyder opened a conference on Mackinac Island today by asking the state’s business leaders to hire veterans.

“Unemployment for our veterans is running at about 30 percent, and that’s simply unacceptable,” Snyder told a crowd of statewide business and political leaders today. “The people who can do a lot to solve that problem are us.”

Snyder was addressing about 1,500 people attending the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual conference on Mackinac Island.

The governor recently returned from a visit with Michigan National Guard units serving in the Middle East. He says that trip re-affirmed his commitment to helping veterans find jobs when they return.

“We need to help these people,” he said. “So I ask you to do everything possible to make the session and to hire them. That would be great. Thank you.”
