A helmetless Muskegon man lost control of his motorcycle on Tuesday and died on US-31, less than a month after helmets became optional in Michigan.

MLive reports 33-year-old Timothy Preston died after he lost control of his motorcycle and was struck by a car traveling in the opposite direction. Police say they can’t tell if a helmet would have saved his life.

Michigan’s motorcycle helmet law was repealed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Snyder just last month.

The change was strongly opposed by the insurance industry and safety advocates. Supporters say it will boost tourism.
