Emergency services were restored in Cheboygan this morning, six weeks after the community hospital was shuttered. The ER re-opened at 7:00 am.
The former Cheboygan Memorial Hospital is now a satellite of Petoskey’s hospital, McLaren-Northern Michigan. There will not be in-patient services in Cheboygan. Anyone who needs to be admitted overnight will be transported to Petoskey.
Cheboygan Memorial Hospital declared bankruptcy in March and a $5 million dollar deal to buy it and keep it open fell through in early April. That forced the closure of a hospital with no money to operate even one more day. The sale to Flint-based McLaren was revived late last month and completed in early May.
Outpatient surgical services are also expected to re-open this month. The target date remains May 29th.
