The Bay Area Transportation Authority will be eliminating its Traverse Express Service Sunday. The dedicated route from downtown Traverse City to area shopping centers is being cut as part of a larger plan to improve service to the community.

Money saved will get shuffled into new routes coming this summer, and to better technology that will improve busing and customer service.

“GPS, motor-data terminals, fare boxes, which we’ll be working on this summer,” lists BATA Ececutive Director Tom Menzel. “And also we are planning on having a new website at the end of July.”

The new website will be easy to use with smart phones.

Menzel says the bus system also plans to alleviate traffic by offering shuttles from parking lots outside the downtown during the area’s two largest festivals.

“We would transport people back and forth from 8:00 in the morning for the Cherry Festival every 30 minutes,” he says. “We would do the same for the Film Festival and would add onto that getting people to-and-from the various venues on a consistent basis every 30 minutes.”

Menzel says the bus service is in talks with the festivals.
