A northern Michigan Americana artist will be prominently displayed in downtown Grand Rapids at this year’s ArtPrize.

Key to getting noticed in the massive art competition each year is location. Size helps too. Tom Moran will have both.

Moran is an untrained artist, a welder and a major employer in Onaway. Each year he unveils a new, massive sculpture at his hometown Independence Day parade and since the late 90s his Americana sculptures have begun to dot the landscape in northern Lower Michigan.

His first ArtPrize submission will be a 12-foot-tall steel bust of Grand Rapids’ hometown president, Gerald R. Ford. Colored gold, the bust will be displayed outside The B.O.B. in Grand Rapids. That’s the same spot that displayed a super-sized flying pig in that generated a lot of buzz in 2010.

The competition starts September 19th.
