Accusations of closed-door deals persist in Traverse City after a commission meeting last night. City commissioners rejected the recommendation of an ad hoc committee for an appointment to the city’s utility board. With little discussion a majority instead chose someone the committee had twice passed over.
Commissioner Jim Carruthers says it appears the decision had been discussed prior to the meeting, which could violate the Open Meetings Act.
"We’re always being accused of doing things behind the scenes" says Carruthers. "This was a classic example."
Commissioner Mike Gillman voted in the majority. He says no other commissioner contacted him about his vote.
