A significant amount of trash has washed ashore in sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Most of it was reported at Esch Road Beach and near Otter Creek.

Lakeshore officials say there's not enough trash to warrant closing the beach, and clean-up efforts are already underway. But it is noticeable, and some of the trash appears to be medical waste.

"I guess I would say it's enough trash that it might make your trip to the beach less pleasant than you had hoped because it does take up enough of the beach that you would certainly notice it, and maybe have to avoid it on a walk on the beach, or throwing down your towel, or playing Frisbee or something like that," says Deputy Superintendent Tom Ulrich.

State officials say the trash is coming from Milwaukee, where sewers overflowed during heavy rain in late July.
