The Bay Area Transportation Authority has decided against entering the green energy generation business.

BATA had been considering building a wind turbine in Long Lake Township. In 2005, the bus system was awarded a grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation to help pay for a wind turbine. The idea is for the bus system to make money by selling electric power to Traverse City Light & Power. The revenue would off-set electric costs to operate hybrid buses.

But BATA's Executive Director, Tom Menzel, says start-up costs and the risk involved put this project low on BATA's list of priorities. Menzel says he's working the DOT to find another use for the grant money, possibly using it to buy new buses.
