A Norwegian Company wants to put up more offshore windmills farther south along the west Michigan coast.

Scandia Wind cut the size of its original proposal near Ludington in half, and now it wants to put those windmills six miles off Grand Haven. That would mean 500 megawatt wind farms in each location.

Scandia also says the Muskegon area could be a hub to build and supply wind equipment for the region.

The head of Michigan's Alternative and Renewable Energy Center in Muskegon says offshore wind is coming to the Great Lakes, and places like New York, Ontario, Cleveland and Wisconsin are deep into discussions about it.

"Perhaps one or two will become real serious locations for major offshore wind deployment that will support most of the Great Lakes area," Arnold Boezart says.

Muskegon area officials are taking a serious look at the economic impacts of the proposal.

Scandia continues to say without local support it won't proceed.
