The first full year of Traverse City's National Writers Series begins this week at the City Opera House.

Nationally syndicated advice columnist Amy Alkon is the first author in a season that will include best-sellers Tom Brokaw, James Bradley, Peter Matthiessen and others.

Traverse City resident Doug Stanton is one of the founders of the National Writers Series.

He says the series won't simply be another author reading.
