Calvin “Rusty” Gates passed away this weekend. Gates was nationally known for his efforts to protect the waters of the Au Sable River. Most recently he sued the US Forest Service to stop new gas wells from going in near the South Branch of the Au Sable on a piece of land known as the Mason Tract. Gates came to Grayling in 1970 as a young teenager and later took over the family business, Gates Au Sable Lodge.

Josh Greenburg manages the lodge. He told IPR's Peter Payette that Gates recruited him to tie flies during his first visit to his fly shop. And Greenburg says it wasn’t because of any extraordinary skill on his part.

Rusty Gates

Rusty's passing is like a whole bend of the Ausable River was taken away, he was that much a part of it. Love him or hate him, he was a force to reckon with when it came to issues related to the river and for that he should be remembered and heralded.
