The state court of appeals says the owners of Centre ICE Arena near Traverse City must pay property taxes. The court upheld a decision by the state tax tribunal that says the ice rink is not a charity and so it not exempt from property taxes. The group that operates the rink claimed it provided a gift to the community and didn't cover all its costs with user fees.

Centre ICE Arena hosts hockey and skating programs and the Detroit Red Wings preseason camp in September. The rink was exempt from property taxes when it was built in 1997. In 2004 the county assessor put it on the tax rolls. Its tax bill was more than $60,000 this year.
