U.S. Coast Guard officials say they have no plans uproot the Cutter Mackinaw from its home port in Cheboygan and they say they’re eager to dispel rumors that the Cheboygan port could be closed because of lack of access to health care.

“With the future of the Cheboygan hospital unknown – I’m hearing and I’m reading news stories about it, it could reopen, or might reopen, or what have you – regardless, we’re looking at other medical facilities within the region but all well within the Mackinaw’s home port in Cheboygan.

“So, once again, at this time the Coast Guard is not looking to move the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw out of Cheboygan,” says Chief Petty Officer Kyle Niemi, with District Nine in Cleveland.

Niemi says the cutter’s crew has heard rumors through friends and family back home in Cheboygan.
