The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians announced today the tribe has entered into a collective bargaining agreement with the United Steelworkers Union. The agreement covers slot machine technicians at the Little River Casino Resort in Manistee.

It's the second successful bargaining agreement since the tribe has allowed union organizing. Security guards also signed an agreement at the end of last year.

Indian nations in Michigan, and throughout the U.S., have argued the sovereign nations are exempt from federal and state labor law. Many refuse to allow unions in tribal casinos.

But a growing number of tribes, including the Little River Band, have opted to allow unions under tribal law.
