The state police post in Gaylord says the number of marijuana busts along I-75 has increased three fold this year. Sgt. Jeff Gorno says officers making routine traffic stops are finding a lot more illegal marijuana. He believes the increase is because so many people now have permits to use medical marijuana.

"It's just there's that much more out there for people that's easily obtainable for people who aren't supposed to carry it."

More than 100,000 Michigan residents have a permit to use medical marijuana. But under the state law they are limited in the amount they can carry.

Gorno says the number busts for other drugs like heroin and prescription narcotics have been relatively stable this year.
