It may soon be harder for injured workers in Michigan to receive full workers compensation benefits. The state House has given final approval to a measure that would allow insurance companies to dock an injured worker's payments by the amount the company believes the worker could make at another job.

Democratic state Representative Vicki Barnett says injured workers should be allowed to recover from their injuries before they are expected to work again.

"I urge my colleagues to please don't take injured workers and force them back before they've healed, that's not what the bill was supposed to be about, and it's certainly not the kind of people we hope to be," she says. "Let injured individuals get the time they need to heal."

Supporters of the proposal say they changes would help prevent fraudulent workers comp claims. And they say it will help stabilize the finances of the workers comp system.
