Traverse City Area Public Schools will reopen one of the elementary schools it closed in 2007. The district plans to add to its growing list of alternative programs.

TCAPS has closed six elementary schools in the past decade. One now houses Traverse City's alternative high school and another is home to a public Montessori elementary program.

This week TCAPS also decided to reopen Bertha Vos in Acme Township. The district plans to run Montessori program there with an International Baccalaureate accreditation. IB is a curriculum used worldwide that is accredited by an organization based in Switzerland.

The decision came out of a strategic planning process Traverse City schools went through during the last year.

The plan also calls for a primary school focused on the arts and another focused on math and science. Both those programs would need to be designed, however, and are not expected in the near future.
