Local government leaders in Michigan have mixed feelings on their employee unions, according to a new poll conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan.

More than half of surveyed county and municipal leaders say unions have a negative fiscal impact on the local government.

But most also say they have good working relationships with their unions, and they say unions have either a neutral or positive impact on government operations.

Those questions were asked of local leaders where employees are unionized.

While the biggest governments are overwhelmingly unionized, few smaller governments have employee unions - less than a third of all counties and municipalities statewide.
