A citizens group is appealing a permit for a large wind farm in Mason County. The County Planning Commission approved a plan for Consumers Energy to build 56 commercial-scale turbines south of Ludington.
Cary Shineldecker, president of Citizens' Alliance for Responsible Renewable Energy, or CARRE, says the Commission ignored reams of studies and documents the group submitted, and didn't give the group adequate time to present its findings at a public hearing.
"We were denied due process in so many ways. That is the main reason we've decided to hire attorneys," he says.
The Planning Commission approved the permit on a six-to-zero vote last week.
Consumers says it plans to invest more than $30 million dollars in the project, and taxes on the turbines will go to two townships, the county and the school system.
