Police in Traverse City have arrested an 18-year-old man accused of raping a woman while she slept last night in her downtown home.

The 35-year-old victim told police she did not know the suspect before he entered her Webster Street home through an unlocked door. She awoke, and her scream woke her roommate.

The suspect then fled on foot and was caught nearby, at about 12:30 this morning.

Police allege the teen admitted to having targeted his victim specifically, that he had been watching her home for a while.

His name has not yet been released, but he's expected to be arraigned this afternoon on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and home invasion.

Police say he is a high-school graduate who lives in Traverse City.

Captain Brian Heffner couldn't immediately remember the last time he's seen a case where someone was accused of sexually assaulting a stranger in Traverse City. He says it's rare, and that it's been "years."
