The Gaylord City police chief says heroin use in his jurisdiction has reached "epidemic proportions." The Gaylord Herald Times reports there have been five deaths in the area from drug overdoses since January 1st.

Narcotics enforcement officers say heroin is on the rise because it's become more difficult for addicts to get hold of prescription drugs that produce a similar high.

Earlier this week, Benzie County officials also said they were troubled a sudden rise of overdoses in the county. Two deaths, likely overdoses, happened just this week in Benzie. One of the victims was also pregnant.
