Representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspected abandoned vessels still-afloat in Duncan Bay near Cheboygan.

The ferry Joelle AnnMarie and the tug William Hoey broke loose from their anchor during high winds this week and are now aground on the bay's east side.

Duncan Bay Boat Club harbormaster Larry Shepard has called for removing the vessels since they were abandoned last August. He says it makes sense to deal with them before they get loose again.

"If they left the Bay, my guess is Coast Guard would have to take responsibility and hook onto them and do whatever they have to do with them."

No fuel oil remains on either boat after being drained last fall. A spill contaminated about 300 yards of beach near Cheboygan State Park.

A Sault St. Marie businessman who owns the boats is free on bond after being charged for the spill by the DNR.
