There's a map being circulated that shows where a big wind energy project would be built in northwest lower Michigan. The picture appears to be a snapshot of a web page showing the locations for more than a hundred turbines in Benzie and Manistee Counties.

Opponents of the project distributed the map. They say the tower locations were filed with air safety officials in Lansing and passed along to the Frankfort airport.

A spokeswoman for Duke Energy says the information is totally inaccurate. She says the company still is signing leases with landowners and there's been no turbine placement yet.

The map shows a heavy concentration of turbines around Arcadia in Manistee County and a couple of lines of windmills run west of U.S. 31 slanting to north of Herring Lakes in Benzie County.

Three of the four townships in the target area have passed moratoriums on approving any large windmills. Local officials want to shore up their rules for things like how tall turbines can be and how far away from neighboring properties.

Mid Evil Technology

If you're for a Mid-Evil Technology that will only succeed to increase your electric bill by 40%-60% as it has in Canada.....then this is for you.

Benzie County Wind Turbines

Why would anyone oppose a new sustainable energy source for Michigan and some of it's poorest counties?! I appreciate IPR and it's attempts to bring about public awareness. I am sure there are persons on both sides of this issue and they both have good points. The reality is Michigan's power plants are aging badly. Clean, renewable energy is the only real solution. These wind turbines could be our opportunity to make a difference for Michigan's future and the local economies. Opponets of this positive development have spurred my interest as a member of the local community to get involved. Debates are a good thing! Please! Do not squander this opportunity to do a really good thing for our future. We need to model progressive community participation for other Michigan counties less fortunate than us! If anyone has some ideas that can help me to participate further, please feel free to contact me by e-mail. Jim

FAA map

Consumers Energy did the same thing. When map was circulated with the longitude and latitude locations identified as wind turbines to the FAA, from information supplied by Consumers Energy, they also called the map completely in accurate when confronted. Make no mistake this is a business and billions in profit hang in the balance for these wind prospectors. They don’t care about anything except installing these massive structures in your community and they will use every means necessary to achieve that goal. I sincerely hope you are able to stop these people from destroying your community. When Consumers Energy came out with their own map it was nearly identical. We need to address the political support of these projects or this will be the first of many fights. Repeal the Renewable Portfolio Standard, and stop the guaranteed loans and Production Tax Credits that funnel billions into the pockets of wind developers.

Arcadia Wind Farm

Can we stop arguing back and forth and name calling and just wait a bit and see how this fleshes out, all the bickering doesn't get anything done. Do your research with an unbiased mind and let the chips fall where they may. Take a look at the wind farm east of Cadillac, talk to the local residents and get real feedback.

These maps are valid

Having dealt with wind company developers here in my own area, I can tell you that these maps are generally accurate. They may not reflect the project built, but it does reflect an ideal state where they are able to build on the properties they have leased. The developers say that they aren't actual site maps... we know. But you can take the FAA height obstruction site maps and overlay them with a plat map to see where the parcels lay, and amazingly enough it synchs perfectly with the leases recorded at the register of deeds. It also amazingly has the promised (ineffective and way too short) 1320ft setbacks from homes. Bottom line is that these maps for most intensive purposes represent what the developer INTENDS to build.

Editorial Decision

Saying something doesn't make it true. Duke Energy has since told IPR that the information is based on preliminary site data provided to the state. We have covered these issues enough to know how the process works and we were convinced of the value of the map in spite of one employee's assertions at Duke. So we published it. This report stands.

Wind Farm Maps

Your rules about posting on this web site state, "IPR reserves the right not to publicize rumors, allegations, conspiracy theories and other information which we know to be false or unsubstantiated." You say opponents of the wind farms are distributing this map. When you question Duke's representative, they told you sites have not yet been selected. Duke says this map is unsubstantiated. This project is very controversial. Are you violating your own rules by publishing this map? Are you being irresponsible and adding fuel to the fire by publishing something you know to be unsubstantiated? I listen to you all day long everyday. NPR and Interlochen Publice Radio is one source of news and information I consistently rely on. I believe publishing this map is very irresponsible on your part. If it is part of an FAA permit, it is public information and you should be able to find a copy of the permit it accompanies. You have not provided that information. I believe you have not checked to see if such a permit has been filed. If in fact, such a permit has been filed, why would Duke deny these locations have been selected when they would already be part of the public record? Shame on you.

Purported Wind Turbine Map

I am surprised that Interlochen Public Radio has seen fit to publish a map of purported wind turbine sites that the utility has dismissed as highly inaccurate. Had I tried to post the map in a comment, it would have not been published because it violates your comment policy: "We appreciate the news tips members of the public send us. However, IPR reserves the right not to publicize rumors, allegations, conspiracy theories and other information which we know to be false or unsubstantiated." Duke has dismissed the map. I see no evidence of IPR attempting to verify the map with any inquiry to "safety officials" in Lansing or the Frankfort Airport. It should be understood that the opponents have an agenda to stop windmills and this map seems to be part of that agenda--another violation of Interlochen Radio's policy. IPR--be consistent and take down the link.
