From staff reports

Governor Granholm and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Betty Weaver have scheduled a noon news conference, where Weaver is expected to announce she is resigning today.

Weaver told the Traverse City Record-Eagle she intends to step down, if the governor agrees to name an "independent justice" from northern Michigan to the court. According to George Weeks, a political columnist in Traverse City, Weaver has named as her top choice Appellate Judge Alton Thomas Davis, of Grayling. Davis is a Granholm appointee, and a Democrat.

If events play out quickly, the justice Granholm names to the court might be able to file to run in this fall's election as an incumbent.

Weaver was up for re-election this year. She had given up her Republican affiliation after years of feuding with other G.O.P. justices.
