State Senator Jason Allen has conceded the Republican nomination for northern Michigan's First Congressional District. That leaves it to Dr. Dan Benishek, a general surgeon from Iron River, to battle it out with Democratic state Representative Gary McDowell for the seat currently held by Bart Stupak in Washington.

Michigan's Board of Canvassers certified the primary vote Friday morning, with Benishek just 15 votes ahead of Allen.

Allen could have asked for a recount, but lending his support to Benishek, he announced late Saturday that he would not do so. A recount would have been expensive for both candidates, and results may not have been clear before early September. That would have put the eventual winner behind in campaigning for the general election, set for this November.
