A Republican will represent Michigan's 1st Congressional District for the first time in 18 years. Dan Benishek has taken the seat long held by Bart Stupak.

The numbers soared past 50 percent for Dr. Benishek at about 10 p.m. last night. The phone call came quickly from his democratic rival Gary McDowell, conceding defeat.

Benishek says he never took a win for granted.

"I'm heartened  that the people of Michgian's First District supported my campaign and saw me as a fresh face and  a conservative, and as somebody they know will represent their values in Washington," he says.

Benishek, a surgeon from Crystal Falls, was very emotional as he talked about his victory. He held his celebration not far from his hometown, at a ski resort in Iron Mountain.

Benishek supporter Lisa Cram says Republican victories should be a wakeup call tonight.

"This is a country of the people for the people," she says. They work for us. We don't' work for them. They didn't listen."
