Almost half the seats on the Board of Education in Traverse City are open this year. Northern Michigan's largest school district serves nearly 10,000 students. Financial problems continue to mount for the district as charter schools in the region keep drawing off students and the federal government lays plans to spend four billion dollars influencing education across the country. Seven candidates are vying for three seats on the Traverse City Area Public Schools board.
