Matthew Hazelwood

Words cannot express our grief. He was a kind, compassionate, and dedicated leader. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will miss him dearly. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go to his wife and family.

Terribly saddened

Matthew was a dear friend from the time he used to go to Costa Rica to conduct the National Symphony where I used to play, through the work we did together with the Youth Philharmonic of Colombia a couple of years ago. He was an absolutely wonderful individual, always willing to give of himself to others, and to offer inspiration to the new generation of musicians. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in peace Mateo, knowing that you will live on through all of us who knew you and were the beneficiaries of your beautiful spirit and unending friendship...

Matthew Hazelwood

So sad to hear of Mr. Hazelwood's death this morning. He was one of the sweetest, most talented conductors I have ever met in my life. I am thankful to say I was blessed to have him as a conductor during my years at Interlochen Arts Academy and am greatful for his impact on my music. Prayers to his family and friends.

Mr. Hazelwood

I loved this man because he helped me find my voice. He brought music to the world, and inspired countless young musicians. Our collective voice is a little softer now. The song goes on... Jason Troyan, Interlochen Arts Academy, 1995-1997
