President Obama opened his 2011 State of the Union speech with an appeal for civility in political discussion. The tragic shooting this month in Tucson has spurred all sorts of questions about how we approach political discussion in this country.

It was a question one Traverse City group was already asking. The Traverse City Human Rights Commission started planning a local forum on "civility" even before the term became ubiquitous in American political commentary.

Play the audio above for IPR's talk with Marshall Persky, a member of the commission. He says debate last year over a local anti-discrimination law spurred the committee to discussions of civility.
